The Story of – Adrian Webb Sydney Electrician
The challenge: generate sales calls for an electrician’s website being ignored by Google
The result: dramatically changed what Google saw without changing the look of the website
As a Sydney electrician Adrian Webb works hard. He turns up on time, cleans up after his work and does a good job as an electrician. Most of his work is by word of mouth referrals – the best kind. Yet he had a well designed website that was being ignored by Google. It was not generating the level of business it could. There are many electricians in Sydney. It’s competitive. Other Sydney electricians were receiving work that Adrian would have loved.
As far as Google was concerned the Adrian Webb Electrical website was about “electrical” and “2008″. These were the words repeated the most on the home page. Google is a robot. Google wants to take a searcher to the most relevant and popular websites. How Google decides that depends on a variety of factors. The most relevant factor for this project was simply content. No where did the website text mention together the word “electrician” and “Sydney”. For this type of business they are the most important keywords.
By analysing what people were actually searching on in Google a extensive list of relevant keywords was established. These included “electrician”, “mobile electrician” plus suburbs and areas such as “Northern Beaches and the “North Shore”. The AWE Electrical website could not be edited online and the existing design worked well so it was a task of rewriting all the content for the web designer to upload.
The word “electrician” alone now appears 10 times on the home page. The density of relevant keywords has been dramatically lifted throughout the site. This is a simple but essential step in being found by Google and much cheaper than running an Adwords campaign.
Relevant keywords and exact phrases were included in every pages’ Titles, Description and Keywords meta data and headings. Keywords were then repeated throughout the text for every page of the site. Just mentioning keywords in the “meta keywords” html text of a page is worthless if those words are not repeated elsewhere.
It was a fun one day project but yet another reminder that for the robot we know as Google your website content is more important than its design.
