I recently watched a webinar on the changing face of the internet. Some statistics startled me.

In 2001 the top 10 websites on the internet generated an amazing 31% of all traffic. That means 1 in every 3 website visits was to one of only 10 websites.

Since then millions of new websites have been created. With the growth of the internet you would imagine this concentration of websites would decline.

Rather than the addition of millions of websites diluting the traffic the traffic has been dramatically concentrated. In 2010 the top 10 websites on the internet generated 72% of all website traffic.

The prediction for 2012 was that 82-85% of all traffic would be concentrated to the top 10 websites.

And no the webinar didn’t state what the top 10 websites were but you can probably guess most of them.
